what kind of fluid?
what kind of fluid?
I have an '84 Z28 with the stock T-5 and I have about 150k on it and I want to change the fluid in the tranny. Does anybody know whether you use gear oil or regular tranny fluid? Nobody I ask seems to know, some say gear oil and some say tranny fluid.
Thanks for any help

Your non-world class T5 uses gear oil, as do all 83-87 non-world class T5's. The 88-92 world class T5's use automatic transmission fluid.

ok here is what my gm shop manual says:
all 82-84 5spd`s use sae 80w or 80w/90 gl-5 gear lube
85-86 and 88-92 5spd`s use dexron II auto trans fluid
and 87 5spds use sae 5w-30 manual transaxle oil,
it also says that for 1984 5spds the amount is 3.5 pts.

Every T5 that I have ever seen had ATF in it. When you change it just observe the fluid color--if it comes out reddish brown and really thin then put ATF in, if it comes out dark brownish to black then put a light weight motor oil back in. Either way your better off than 150,000 mile old fluid.
