help with T56 shifter rails assembly!

Hey all,

I've rebuilt a T56 transmission... I'm unsure of the methodology to get the shifter rails and shifter synchronized. Does anyone have a method/preferred procedure for this? I took a crack at it but I can't find neutral I think something is not in sync. The ball is also difficult to get into that piece with the spring which it follows the pattern you can shift.

Does anyone have some tips or a procedure they followed that works good to get the shifter rails and everything working correctly as I put the case together?

Re: help with T56 shifter rails assembly! solved 50%

Looks like I've solved it somewhat... Now I'm able to find all the gears. I removed the T40 guide pin that goes into the transmission casing. It's the one that interfaces with the shifting. The other shift guide pin (the one I did NOT remove rides along a groove in the 5/6/Reverse shift rail).

I've attached a picture. I've outlined with red the slot where the pin was into. The picture doesn't show the "front" of the piece but anyone who's seen it knows what it looks like. Was this the correct placement for this pin?

any help is much appreciated. I'm close to being done!

Re: help with T56 shifter rails assembly!

This isn't directly related to what your asking but my buddy just rebuilt my T56 this summer and had to pull it back apart cause one of the shift forks was nocked a little out of place when the case was lowered over the front plate causing the tranny to be in 2 gears at the same time. It was a major pain cause he had it all back together and sealed then we realized it wouldn't leave 1st. I was there when he did it the first time and he barely touched the shift. To get it back together on the second go around it took 2 of us and some very careful manuvering. Hope this might save you a little headache down the line.

Re: help with T56 shifter rails assembly!

Hey thanks for the info... Yeah I had to push the main shifting rail over with a flat piece of metal while putting the endpiece on to get it to line up right and close completely.

also, when you're done, make sure you put it in all of the gears and turn the input shaft by hand make sure it's affecting the output shaft accordingly. Neutral will still move the output shaft if there is no tension but to test neutral, hold the output shaft with your hand and you should be able to spin the input shaft without the output shaft moving.

Don't forget to check reverse too! Make sure the direction changes on the output shaft.
