I know somebody that will sell me a used/rebuilt T56 from his 4th gen for $800. I would like to put this tranny in my 91 z28, which currently is automatic. My funds are somewhat limited. Is it worth it? Should I do the swap?

Is it just the trans, or a full change over setup? And is it an LT1 or LS1 style? If it's an LT1 style you need the bell housing, hydraulics, pedal set, clutch and flywheel, shifter, and console plate I believe. (mine was a stick already, so I just reused my plate and boot. Not sure if an auto plate can be made to work) If it's an LS1 type you can get an adapter to use it with a standard T5 style clutch setup, but would still need the bell housing and clutch setup and pedals and to shorten your drive line. Then you will need to find a way to make your speedo work. Generally it seems around $2000 is the going rate for everything to swap a T56 in.

Read the sticky all the way through, then you can make a more informed decision that way.

 

Thats a good price. It will cost you ATLEAST $2000 for the swap no matter what. Unless someone sells you a complete package for much less. But realistically it will be around $2500. Just the way it is......

If you can afford it, its worth it.

Its not such an amazing deal, that you cannot afford not to have it, but it is worth it.

 

Well it is just the transmission and I believe it is LS1 style, so I guess that would be the easier way to go anyway. How can I shorten the driveline?

 

You take your drive line to a shop and have it shortened. Should be easy to find a place to do this.

And forgot to mention you need to buy a special swap cross member. Several places offer them.

It's seems that it's generally accepted here that a LT1 style setup is the easiest swap for a F-body. I've not done the LS1 style, so am not really going to comment on that swap. Just repeating what I've read here about it. Do your research and make your own decision. Any way you do it your gonna be knocking on $2000 by the time your done.

 

yeah, I had about that in my T-5 swap, buy the time iw was all said & done (paid to have it done by a mechanic friend, & he cut me a break on the labor.) But, now that it's done, I'm already wishing maybe I'd done a T-56.
