auto/T5 swap

im sure this has been discussed before, but i dont have alot of time to search around. im in a local race series. $500 cars (more or less) in several 2hr races. what im looking for is a carbed 350/stick 3rd gen. ive had several leads here and there. it will be a stripped/gutted racecar, no glass, welded doors, etc, so condition doesnt matter. my latest lead is an 84 Z28. no motor/trans/hood/dashpad. this particular car was an auto, and im assuming carbed since it was an 84.

just what is invovled in putting in a T5? this car is a roller with no driveline (not sure about driveshaft, probably not). ill be in my garage; i have every basic hand tool you can think of. ill have use of a mig welder. unfortunately ill be doing most all of the work myself. ill have little to no help on most things. of course when it comes to mating trans/motor ill have someone, but 90% of the time ill be alone. i have another lead on an older T5, manual linkage, no hydralics. i assume that will be easier to swap? less parts/lines to mess with?

i know itd be alot easier to find a running T5/305, but there are none within driving distance of me that are in my price range (dirt cheap). ideas, comments, advice?

Re: auto/T5 swap

Only the '83s had T5s but not hydraulic clutch release systems, so this is a very rare setup. May I humbly suggest that unless the entire linkage is included, you sell the bellhousing, and go to the hydraulic setup.

the hydraulic swap will be much easier to do, the mechanical requires getting att the linkage assembled correctly and adjusted properly, they hydraulic is 1 assembly that adjusts itself. its cake, and if you use the setup from 93-97 cars, they have a very nice braided flex line instead of the 3rd gen plactic/rubber one.

he said it was from a very early 3rd gen, so i guess it was an 83. i took a look at an 82 Z28 with a T10, no motor, that would have been perfect for what i need.....if he didnt want too much for it.

how hard would it be to set up the clutch master? ive never done any kind of plumbing like this, and i dont want to get stuck with a roller and bit off more then i can chew.

Re: auto/T5 swap

its comes as an assembled, pre-bled piece. You can probably still get it from the dealer, $$$$$, or off ebay for cheap. Its the master, reservoir, lines, and slave. It all bolts in, you just have to bleed it if its empty, but that is not hard to do.

you would need to make sure that you have the proper bellhousing with the slave bracket for the hydraulic setup, its different than the mechanical cars bell.
