How do you tell what year a disc rear is?

How do you tell what year a disc rear is?
I found a disc brake rear at a local salvage and need to determine what year it is. The confusion is that the car is a 84 HO Z28(verified the vin#), which I know had disc rears avalible. The gear ratio is 3.45, which was NOT avalible until 87 and the car has a 145mph speedo also(some swapping definatly done). How can I tell if it's the problematic pre 87 or upgraded post 88 disc rear?

The later rearend should have a 9 bolt cover.
The axle code is stamped on the front and
center of the right axle tube. The salvage
yard should be able to decode it for you.
If not, someone on this board probably can.

From: previously OKINAWA JAPAN,georgia, now new england
Car: 1989 IROC--1989 T/A
Engine: 5.7 TPI in both
Transmission: W/C T-5 in both
Axle/Gears: B/W 3.27 in both
also after 89 the disc calipers were made of alluminum, and both installe on the back of the rotor. On 88 and earlier they were, back drivers side/ front pass side. Again the 87 up were 9 bolt
