What is a good synthetic Oil for my t56? How Much do I need to get? Does the t56 use the ATF like my old t5 did?

Whether it uses ATF, gear lube or motor oil, get AMSOIL. I got started with the stuff in '83 when my T-50 (yes, 5-speed behind a '77 Buick V6) kept missing the 1-2 shift. After the AMSOIL ATF, I never missed that shift again.

If gear lube, get the Series 2000 75W90. Great stuff.

Not sure on the capacity, but 2 quarts has taken care of any car manual tranny I've seen.

I'll show a little ignorance here. The book I have says "Corvette 6-speed, '97-up, 8 pts". "Corvette, '89-96, 4.4 pts". "Camaro 6-speed, '93-'97, 8.1 pts". Only goes to '97 models, hope yours is covered by one of those (not sure exactly which was a T-56). Guess it's been too long since I've seen manual trannies.

The '89-'96 Vette says gear lube, all the others say ATF.

What kind of Horror stories. I thought synthetic would make it shift smoother?

I've never heard of any such thing. Are they trying to use gear lube instead of ATF, or something like that?

A couple of points:

1) The manual will give a type and spec. If the lube you are using is of the right type and meets the spec, you can use it.

2) If a manufacturer says you can only use their product, they are required by law to provide it free of charge.

I'd be interested to know exactly what these "horror stories" are.
