1st gear??

For some reason ever since I purchased my 87 camaro IROCZ-Z28 I have not been able to put the car into first gear. I have a auto 700R4 tranny and just had it rebuilt less thank 3000 miles ago. The shifter will go into first however, the car will shift out of first and hold second. The only way I hold first for any period of time is to lay into it. Does anyone know what is causing this? Thanks

Re: 1st gear??

thats just the way the trans works. The only way to get it to stay in first, no matter what yoiu do, is to install a manual valve body.

I disagree. My 700r4 holds first strong. Why would 1st even been a selection if it would shift out. I have a 90 th700r4 stock

In my orginal case I had a th350 in my car and the linkage was setup for a 3 speed. And then I installed the 700r4 and but I didn't change my linkage for a couple of day so if I put in selector in 1st gear by what the shifter said. I was really on 2nd on transmission.. Which would do the same thing as u suggest you think your in first but your really in 2nd. So to anwser you question check your linkage

To keep you from overrevving. The 700R4 is designed to upshift at redline regardless of the selector position.

A TransGo shift kit can eliminate this behavior.

Re: 1st gear??

yea the problem is not shifting out but even going into. My first gear when floored holds till around 35 ish. so say i was going 15 and i want to drop to first i cant just stays in second. Unlike when i am rolling around 45 i can drop to second. So yes i will look into linkage possibly
