T5 shifter broke (literally)-

Lately, the trans has been getting hard to shift. Not always, but sometimes. Friday night, I tried to put it into first gear and the shifter stem broke off in my hand. When the shop put the trans in, they filled it with ATF. My manuals say that an 87 t5 should use 5w30 motor oil. Could this be the cause of the hard shifting? Would using a synthetic 5w30 help? The car is an 82, so I still have the mechanical clutch setup. I plan to change to a hydraulic clutch in the future, but for now I need my car back on the road. Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated.

Ummm... I wasn't aware 82's had a T5... unless you did a swap yourself? they had a 4 speed though... I don't think the motor oil used has any effect of the transmission fluid though... then again I could be wrong but I thought they used Dexron (!?)

If you're in need of a new stock T5 shifter I have one that i had on my old transmission...not in the greatest of shape visibly but it works (I upgraded to a B&M Ripper)

You're right, 82s had a Saginaw 4-speed. I did the swap. I appreciate the offer, but I need to get the car on the road this weekend. Thanks anyway.

Do you still have that shifter? If so, send me an email and let me know what you want for it.
