When swapping rears....

I was just wondering a couple of things.. First if swapping out a non posi rear for a posi rear does it matter if the "new" rear that you are putting in was on a manual or automatic car? I am looking for an easy swap.. also how can i tell if i have a posi or non posi rear? I have an 87 Camaro IROC w/ disc brakes all the way around as of right now..

No.

The RPO's G80 will provide an idea, but you'll never really know until you pop the diff cover and take a peek.

Re: When swapping rears....

does it burn out with both wheels or just one?

If it burns with both wheels it is a posi or a limited slip.

It doesnt matter if it is automatic or manual !

The wheel/burnout test can be misleading. Pull the cover. Check the pic in the following link:

Re: When swapping rears....

turn the wheels of the car, if its at a junkyard. if both wheels spin the same way when turned, its a positraction, if one spins one way and one the other, then its an open diff. on newer camaros which i believe are 99? and up, have a zexel torsen diff. which will appear to be an open diff. but really are positraction units

Re: When swapping rears....

Id look for manual cars first, most of them had like 3.42 gear ratios. Also the best way is to pop the diff cover and see if there is a posi unit in there. But of course the easiest would be to just spin the wheels.
