Corvette 700-R4 in a T/A ?

Hi

Instead of buying a new Rossler transmission for my 83 T/A, I consider to buy a 350 L98/TH-700 combo coming from a friend's 86 Vette...

The good news is that he sells me the combo for only 1500 Euros ( cheap, here in France ). The bad news : The engine electronic wiring is incomplete, and the Vete trans doesn't fit F-babies.

A mechanic previously told me he could set the Vette gears into my F-body TH-700 transmission case. What do you think of that ?

Why wouldn't the Vette tranny not fit? Your mechanic said that? Short of the torque arm mount, externally, its the same tranny.

Might be a different tail housing for the torque arm mount, dunno. Even then, a simple tail swap should be easy to do at home, from your original tranny. But I wouldn't be surprise to find out, the Vette tranny has bolt in mount ready for the F-body torque arm.

Yup, the mechanic, er... the crook that used to repair my car said it doesn't fit because of the trans mounts...

Since now I know that all this guy says is probably wrong, I'd easily believe I can mount a Vette trans on my T/A...

Re: Corvette 700-R4 in a T/A ?

Lemme make a small correction of my post.....

The tranny mount is on the case, not the tail shaft. BUT, that being said....Looking on the web at the 2 mounts...I see NO difference between the 2. So...How could the crook.....errrr......mechanic, say it won't fit?

Now.....

There are 3 threaded holes in the mount, but 3rd gens only use 1...Maybe the Vette used the other 2? And the replacement mounts are a "universal" mount? 1 part #.....2 (or more) body lines?

But there is still the question of a 3rd gen torque arm mounting to a Vette tranny. Maybe the same case? I dunno. I'm sure a more knowledgeable Vette tranny member will chime in, or you can contact a tranny shop that would know. I know there is at least 1 tranny rebuild shop here on TGO, as a User.

Re: Corvette 700-R4 in a T/A ?

Thanks for the precision...
Living in France, things are not as easy as if I was in the States, unfortunately...

The crook (looking my current engine, he's definitely one) said the easiest solution was to transfer the Vette gears into the T/A transmission case.

Seems risky to me. Or, at least, it demands TRUE skills in transmission rebuilding.

Stephen, is there any website we can see detailed Vette and Firebird components assemblies ? like drawings of "busted" assemblies...

Internally, the parts should easily swap. Just a matter of the Servo, valve body, plates & such being different OEM, but swappable internally.

Keep in mind, I am not an internal tranny rebuilder, so I don't KNOW, but I can't think of anything preventing it.
