700R4 Crossmember in '82 TA

Guys, I need some help. I've swapped an 87 350 TPI/700R4 combo into a 1982 Trans Am. However, the crossmember from either year will NOT line up with the tranny mount and the holes in the frame. I've been looking everywhere to find someone who offers this crossmember, but to no avail. Has anyone else out there done this swap and had a crossmember made? If so, could you please give me dimensions or pictures? I've even tried making my own but when I go to line it up on the car, it still doesn't work. I suppose this is the one thing that would have to hinder me since it's the only year with only the TH200 available. Any help from you guys is very appreciated. Thanks.

- Bob

Drill your own holes into the frame where you want it.
If you go with strong nuts, bolts, and lock washers you will not have a problem.

I ran into this same problem swapping a t-5 into my 82 trans am. Rather then modifiy the frame of the car, I modified the stock 82 crossmember. I welded on a 1/4" steel plate to the top of the cross member, overhanging on the necessary side(forget if it was front or back" I then installed the crossmember, dropped the tranny down so it touched and made a little mark in the new plate, then removed the crossmember and drilled the hole.
It turned out that I needed to notch the side of the crossmember because the bolt would have come down right in the middle of the side. Anyway, it worked out great, and I didnt cut have to cur holes in my frame. If you fu*k up a crossmember, its alot easier to replace than a frame.

I dont have any dimensions, basically I welded on a plate that was plenty big, and drilled the hole where necessary.

Good Luck.

Do like ODB says and drill holes in the frame to match the '87/TH700 crossmember. I did exactly that thing, had to punch another hole towards the end of the frame section to slide a nut/washer in there for the stock-type bolt.

In my 82 bird, I went from the 2.8l v/6 and a 4speed to a 350 with a 700, I used the same 4spd crossmember front holes of the crossmember bolted right up to holes already in the body. Only the rear holes of the crossmember did I have to drill and use spacers on (which I did long after the fact).

Thanks, Mike, that's what I should have said... Except that I had all 4 bolts before the tires hit the pavement!

We can build you a crossmember that will bolt right in using the existing mounting locations on your 82 car.
