700R4 rebuild
I'm sure one day it will be time to rebuild my trannie. Is it worth trying to do it myself or is it something left for the pros? It's an area I've never touched except for filter changing.

I just started one two weeks ago (in spare time)
Don't deadline yourself on building it or you will forget one of the million rubber o-rings somewhere. I disassembled the whole thing with 4 sockets&3/8 ratchet, a hammer,a pair of needle nose, two flathead screwdrivers...
The hardest part was getting the low/reverse piston spring assm out of the case because you need a special tool ($63 ridiculous dollars from kent-moore)
I used a pitman arm puller and a 8" piece of 3/8 threaded rod and it worked perfect!
Assembly needs feeler gagues/calipers, bushing installers (sockets) and other stuff. I actually found it easier to use to small screwdrivers than a pair of snapring pliers (quicker for me anyway)
It's not for the faint of heart and everything must be perfectly clean before reassembly. Compressed air is good to check your clutch packs, servos, ect. and to blow out all the passages.
A good book helps too, but to supplement it print all this stuff out:

And you can buy alot of parts cheap here:

They aren't that bad to rebuild. I've reassembled one in about an hour. DO NOT attempt a rebuild without a press/access to, an atsg or equivalnet book, a flat bladed screw driver w/ a notch cut into the side of the blade, lots of light, a teflon seal installing/sizing tool kit(I believe the 700 had some solid teflon seals), a parts cleaner and compressed air. I think you have a good idea in going to the junkyard and getting a core to practice on. To bad they are so expensive. Above all remember "It's just a transmission, don't let it kick your *** ". You will soon learn why they make special tranny tools.
