T-5 Fluid

I know that this is a stupid question but what type of tranny fluid should i put in my T-5?? I am in the process of converting the car from a 700 and this t-5 had no fluid in it when i got it - I just got it rebuild and i have been getting conflicting answers as to what type of fluid it takes - ATF or gear oil?? The tranny is out of an 87 305 TPI car - Thanks - Erik

i believe only the WC t5s used AFT, starting in 88, but i'm not sure so ther you are another conflicting story.

I had a WC T-5 and it used ATF. Not sure about the standard T-5. I know, thanks for nothing!

My 86 Z takes ATF. I've heard rumour that Borg Warner changed the lubricating material during the life of the T-5. I'm not sure if there is any corresponding hardware changes other than the likely seal changes for lubrication media compatibility. Sorry, I don't think that was much help.

Fluid compatibility is an issue here with the natural vs synthetic hydraulic oils used for helos. Use the synthetic hydraulic fluid in an old helo with natural rubber seals/gaskets and you'll have leaks everywhere!

GM offers a synthetic manual gear lube and I highly recommend it. If you do not want to spend that much at least get a semi-synthetic ATF.

I put 20K on a T5 with a 383 in front of it. I think the lube helped a lot. As a matter of fact Tremec will not even warrantee a transmission unless you use this GM lube.

82-87 non-world-class T5's use gear oil. 88-92 world class T5's use ATF.
