Tranny Fluid Diffs?

I work in a Lube Shop and yet I don't know what the difference is between the different types of tranny fluids. I know that Type F is for Ford and Dex-Mer III is for GM and others, but what is the difference between the fluid itself?

Just something I have been wondering.

wrong....type F is for early 80 fords and previous....most newer fords use dexron mercon also....most GM use dex too
chrysler, dodger etc use +3 atf. i think it is a superior lube...as it costs on average 1-2 dollars more than dex and F

Ford made type F because they screwed up on their engineering and made mushy shifting trans. back then.
