3rd gen rear vs. 4th gen rear

Can you use the ring and pinion gears out of a 4th gen rear end in a 3rd gen? I wasn't sure if they were the same size. Thanks.

4th gens all have 10-bolts, so you can use 4th gen gears in thirdgens with 10-bolts. But, there is also the gear size problem. 2.73 and 3.08 gears (called 2-series) only work with each other, and 3.23, 3.42, and 3.73 gears (3-series) only work with each other. You cant put 3.23 gears in a 2.73 rear end, for example, without changing the posi unit for one that works with 3.23 gears.

Thanks. I have a 3 series carrier and I just bought a 3.42 gear out of a 4th gen just as a quick fix for this ring gear that I broke a tooth off of. It's holding up still but I don't know for how long. Another question...will powertrax lockers only work with open rear ends? If so, would I be better off staying with the posi rear end that I have or getting a peg leg and a powertrax? One more question, someone put a post on here one time that said something about a company making 9" and 12-bolt rear ends for the 3rd gens. What company was this? Thanks
