Found a 9" to replace my POS 10 bolt.

It's out of a '77 Lincoln Continental. It has disc brakes and is in good condition. Does anyone know the width of this rearend? How much will I have to narrow it? Besides the mounts, bolt pattern, and yoke, is there anything else I should be aware of? I can get it for under $200. Good price? What posi carrier should I buy?

I'll probably go to the junkyard this weekend and measure it, but was wondering what everyone knew.

It'll be a couple of inches wider than a third gen diff. With everyone wanting to put fourth gen diffs into a third gen the extra width will have to be compensated the same way with proper backspaced rims. A slightly narrower 9" diff can be found in late 60's and very early 70's cars. Mustangs, Cougars, Fairlanes, Granada etc.

Take a look at this site.
http://hiqties.hypermart.net/9inch.html

It will give you an idea on what cars to look for. The thirdgen diff is very close 62". At least that's what my 9 bolt with disk brakes measures out in my shed.

Stephen, What 9 bolt do you have? what year and car is it out of? I have a "Australian" rear end. Thats what I was told and the posi casing has it stamped on it. Also the outer baring cover has it stamped on it. It is also has disc brakes. Can you tell me anything about it? I dont know what kind of gears are on it, there not stamped. They just have some numbers on it. Oh ya, its out of a '87 T/A. I was told it was a performance package for that car. How can I tell what service parts to get for the posi? Thanks

Would a 1980 Ford Granada have a 9 inch in it? It has a 255 or 260 V8 in it with a C4 tranny. How would I be able to tell? Thanks.

I've never even had the cover off mine to look inside. The RPO code is all I needed to tell my what it is.

1987 Borg Warner 9 bolt (australian). 3.27 gears, posi, disk brakes.

If your RPO sheet is gone you can still get the axle code. It should be on the passenger side axle tube on the front of the tube. The axle code can tell you what gears are in yours. If your 87 is a 350 TPI with an auto tranny then it's 3.27 gears also. 305's with a manual tranny came with 3.45 gears in 87
