T5 Q... should i shim the input shaft bearing?
im gonna be putting the T5 back in. IF you recall, I took it out cuz the 3/4 shift fork was broken. Lookin at the chiltons manual it tells me in the rebuild instructiosn to measure outputshaft endplay and then put a shim just a hair larger than the measured play on the input shaft bearing and then there should be no play
I was wondering if it was a good idea to do this cuz i can feel a little play on the output shaft and when i push the input shaft into the case the play dissapears. I didnt rebuild the tranny or anything just had the top cover off to replace the fork. So let me know if i should do this, if it will give me better shifting etc

The way I set them is to support the trans with the clutch gear pointing straight up, with the trans supported by the case NOT THE OUTPUT SHAFT; take off the clutch gear bearing retainer; put in all the shims I happen to have; carefully install the retainer with all 4 bolts just barely finger tight until the same feeler gauge blade will just slip in all the way around (all 4 bolts exactly the same tightness); then take out shims equal to whatever feeler gauge clears, minus about .010". So if a .028 feeler gauge just fits, I would take out .018" of shims, leaving about .010" of preload. Then reassemble the bearing retainer with silicone on the bolts and retainer.
Make sense?

Ahhhhh excellent rb! i was getting worried id need to find or borrow a dial gauge.. a feeler gauge is much cheaper! i have a set actually
now where can i find the shims? would a tranny shop carry them?
btw i take it you stand the tranny on end with the extension housing sitting on something but such that there is no load on the output shaft.. like maybe put the tranny standing on end on two two by fours on the outer edges of the extension housing with the output shaft just sitting inbetween the peices of wood and then i do the business at the front
also just to be sure.. should I do this considering i didnt rebuild the tranny.. i just opened it up and noticed play at the output shaft.. will this make the tranny tighter and longer lasting, etc?
Thanks RB!! you know your T5 stuff!

Yeah that would work. You could use a couple of sawhorses and set the thing on there, or if you have a big clamp you could clamp it in place... just anything to hold it up by the case and let the output shaft hang
I have no idea where you could get shims by themselves, I have a whole bunch left over from rebuild kits that I use... maybe you could go to the junkyard and find a few T-5s and hork the shims?
It will definitely tighten it up, don't know how much longer it might make it last, but it will run quieter and shift better. It won't hurt anything.
You might want to swap out the clutch gear bearing while you're there if you have the ambition; just make sure you take the gear out while the trans is horizontal, otherwise you'll drop the 14 rollers down into the case and you'll have to fish them out somehow. The bearing is something real common, a wheel bearing for lots of cars, it's an A-5 set IIRC.
