Normally when someone does a transmission swap, they also buy a new torque arm and proper crossmember for the swap that has the torque arm mount on the crossmember, not the transmission.

Mounting the torque arm off the transmission was a bad idea by GM.

Check out the TGO sponsors. www.spohn.net is popular.

Theres a kit out there that allows you to use a 700R4 tailshaft on a TH350. It also lets you use your stock crossmember and torque arm. It comes with a longer output shaft and a spacer for the rear housing so that the 700R4 tail cone will fit in the same location.

I have one in my garage that I never used, I dont remember the company that produces it or a part #. I found out about it on here, so you can do a search for a 350 switch kit and probably find it.

If you're interested I'll give you a good price on the one I have.

To change the output shaft, you have to completely tear down the transmission. It's the first part that goes in when reassembling the transmission.

I am in process of putting trans back together now. But I still am gonna just use aftermarket crossmember, since I can relocate torque arm mount.

hot rod has a good point. His kit sounds like the best alternative. What gear ratio is in the car? A th350 in third gear 1to1 ratio-will be the same as a 700r4 but you won't have fourth for overdrive .7 Cruising this car will probably be limited if gear ratio is too high numerically. Also the engine on the 1986 isn't a revver is it? A overdrive trans might be a better alternative.

10.1 350 aluminum heads, steel crank and victor jr, i want to put 373 gears in it , thats another project however, my shift point is 6000 i gonna be running 3000 stall. the car is a 5 speed car with a blowen up t-5 in it right now, i dont know how much power my engine set up makes but i dont think a 700r4 would hold the power either.

That's no-where near the limits of a decently built 700r4. There are several guys on this forum that run in the 9's on 700r4's w/o issue.

Personally I don't understand spending any money to try to keep the tq arm mounted to the trans. Even factory it quickly becomes a problem when you start putting decent hp in. - Do it right the first time, or spend more money doing it again.

Re: turbo 350 3speed in a 1986z
I use a 3500 stall in my chevelle and with et streets with this stall knocked .7 seconds off my quarter mile time. 3k might be a little low for that intake. with 3.36 gears and th350 I run out of gearing because my torque is high and rpms low-I'm supercharged. mph ok at 116 with th350-I've kicked the idea around of putting in a 700r4 for a little more on top I think my motor might pull it. If it won't i'll cheat and add more boost. for high performance you should consider upgrading the center support of the th350 internally. It is a weak link with high hp and hard shifts wearing out cases prematurely and popping the snapring off for the l/r clutches. I've seen many trans cases this way. the aftermarket piece bolts in and grabs a second set of lugs in the case.

thanks ed o, ill look into those parts before reassembly, my car is gonna be a weekend cruiser only, I know overdrive would be nice but I have only a limited amount of money to put into it, I have a th350 and all parts to rebuild it. I figured even with a 700r4, a crossmember and torque arm would be needed for my application. I have allready have a case saver for low reverse, b&m red clutchs, highperformance band and a fairbanks shiftkit stage 4.

Re: turbo 350 3speed in a 1986z
most case savers only try to help the existing center support from rotating. This one grabs a whole different set of lugs in the case, you can see the plate that bolts on above what would normally be a stock center support. there is a drum for direct (which is third gear) that uses a sprag for intermediate (which is second) that is a nice upgrade also-but if you ever decide on one of these opt for a hardened outer race also. These additions are good for anyone with a hard shifting th350. i've seen so many ruined th350 cases without the center support upgrade that now i'm rambling on.
