I think my tranny is dying, questions inside...

I think the torque converter in my 700r4 is a lockup converter, and I am wondering if it is suppossed to lock up when the tranny is in 3rd gear. I ask this because my tranny stays in first gear for a long time even with low throttle and when it shifts, the rpm's go way down. Then after a short amount of time I see the rpm's drop about 500 or so. My dad said that the tranny was shifting from 2nd to 3rd, but I think that I have lost 2nd completely, which is why the tranny takes so long to shift out of first. And I'm thinking that the small drop I see in rpm's is just the torque converter locking up. Also when I use my b&m megashifter to downshift into 2nd the tranny goes right into 1st.

Do I need to have the tranny rebuild?
How much does something like that cost?

Do you still have overdrive? If the overdrive seems to be in good working order, then it is possible that the seals on the 2nd gear servo piston are bad. If they are bad, new seals are not a problem to install. If you do this I would install the Corvette servo at the same time. This improve the 1-2 shift, as long as the 2-4 band is still in reasonable shape.
Hope This Helps!!!

I definately still have overdrive, but I just put in a new vette servo that came with the transgo kit I put in, and I checked over the instructions a dozen times when I put it in.

I agree w/ ProBuilt. The second piston uses a "scarf cut" teflon seal, and can easily fall out during installation. I would definatly doublecheck your work.
