Rear End Help PLEASE!!!

Rear End Help PLEASE!!!

Ok so hears the problem. I installed to thick of carrier shims, so the backlash is close at 0, now i need to remove the carrier to put in thinner shims, the problem is with the shims to thick i cant get the carrier to come back out of the rear end. Ive bent 2 huge screw drivers and havent budged the carrier. I dont have a case spreader so how can i get this thing out? Help please!

This is about how tight it shold be if it has new bearing on it. Use a pry bar behind a ring gear bolt, one at the top and one at the bottom. Pry against the gasket surface on the housing. This should get it out. I do this all the time. If you get the shims in and you can pull the diff out by hand then it isn't tight enough.

That worked put a big pry bar behind it and kicked it a lil and it finaly came out. Should it be this tight with old bearings?

Not with old bearings. You should be able to pull it out with old bearings, but it should still be on the tight side.

I had to pry mine out on my 9 bolt. It was a very tight fit. I dont think it has been rebuilt in the past but maybe it has. The bearings all looked great and it spun smoothly.

So whats the best way to put the shims in. do i try to slide both of them in at the same time with the carrier, or do i bolt the carrier in, then put one shim in with out resistance, then pound the other shim in?

I always put the diff in and then the left shim. I take a small screw driver and push everything tight to the left and then get the right shim started. Then tap it in with a small hammer. The bearing race needs to be as stratght as possible. If it is cocked it can cause problems getting the shim in. If the shim is so tight that it starts removing metal from the shim or the housing then use a thinner shim.
