Transmission ID's

Ok, I have some basic mechanical abilities but not the most knowledge in the world. I have a V6 2.8 (I think) in my '84 bird and will eventualy be wanting to drop in a 305 or better yet a 350. Possibly even something out of a GTA. Anywho, I have heard that changing engins sometimes results in having to change trannys as well. I could use some guidance on how to determine exactly what engine and what tranny I have. It is an old car and I don't trust paper documentation. I would rather like to know if there is an ID somewhere actualy on the engine and/or tranny that says what it is.

For an '84, count the spark plugs. If six, your tranny will not fit a V8.

I assume you're talking about an automatic. It should have four forward positions, which means a V8 TH700R4 will fit the crossmember, driveshaft, torque arm, and shifter just fine. You'll need V8 cooling lines and TV cable. Now you're getting into swap details, though, so do a search on this forum for more info on what's involved with that.
