T56 for a 502?

Alright, last night I came across a deal that I think I'm going to try to take advantage of. A fresh 502 for $500. I know I'm going to have to change all kinds of **** with my suspension, already planning on that. I plan on running a good 600 ft/lbs of torque on this naturally aspirated and probably adding anywhere from a 100 to 200 shot of spray so I'm going to need something strong. I want a T56 because I'm wanting to run a 3.89 gear in this and I'd like this car to attempt the Power Tour when I'm done and I don't want it revving to high on the highway so I really want that 6th gear. Has anyone here tried that before? Anyone know what kind of T56 I need and where to get one? What about the bellhousing? I know, lots of questions but I really don't feel like researching right now, I've got to get back to work on my car. Oh Yeah, this is all going into a 1990 hard top T/A.

Re: T56 for a 502?

my buddy has one in his 454 SS truck. 410 ish whp/430wtq. It works just fine, but the trans is rebuilt with steel shift fork and billet synchro keys or something.

There are a few companies that make strong rebuild kits. G force and Tickshift are two of them that can handle 700lbft or more depending on the kit

You'll need a good clutch too. I plan to run the mcleod street twin setup. twin disk clutch good to over 1000hp

Re: T56 for a 502?

A steel 3/4 fork, solid 3/4 syncro keys, brass fork pads will definitely increase the reliability of a T56. But they won't increase the torque capacity one bit. To be able to handle that kind of torque and live you will need to do the viper mod. You replace both the input and output shaft with those from a viper. Takes some work but at those power and torque levels if you want it to live it's necessary. That's if you intend to use the power. Not much use of having a 502 and not using it for what it was intended for

Well, it sure as hell isn't going to be used as a grocery getter, that's for sure. Would the bolt pattern be the same for a 502 as a 454?

Just pay attention to whether its a 1 or 2pc rear main seal, and whether the engine is internally or externally balanced, as that will influence the flywheel choice.

The rest is pretty much bolt in.

You might want to check out these guys.

Re: T56 for a 502?

Well, I just talked to my cousin again about the engine. Turns out he was wrong, it's not a Chevy 502 it's a Caddy 500. I know it'll take way more than I want to spend to get that thing to fit so I'll just restart my search for a big block to throw in. I told him to make sure it's a Chevy if he finds another one for me to look at.
