What's the differance between a 700R4 transmission from a 1986 Sport Coupe and one from a 1986 IROC(or Z28) ?
I had a person at work tell me if I had an IROC(or Z28) tranny it would have been fine behind my 383 TPI. The reason mine went south was the fact it was a Sport Coupe tranny. The engine was of no concern! Is he right? How can I prove him wrong?

They are the same. Of course there may be small differences in valving between models (some have wot in 4th gear ability, and some have manual tcc lockup valves) but they are the same up to when they upgraded the valvebody (in 87)

The six cylinder transmissions are slightly different (input drum has different dimentions [less frictions]) but even most of these parts are interchangable with v8 parts of the same design.

Basically it breaks down into early models (up to 87 1/2) and the later 30 spline auxillary valvebody models (87 1/2 up). May parts between the two designs are interchangable, some interchangable with slight modifications and others are totally dedicated to that type (reverse input drums, valvebodys, sprags....)
