700r4 weirdness

My tranny has been acting up on my 91 RS. When i am flooring it, it doesnt want to shift out of first when it should. It just redlines, not pulling at all for about a second, then it switches to second and i get slammed into the back of my seat. This NEVER used to happen. Anyone have a diagnosis/cure? Thanks.

That is sort of what is happening to me too. I am scared that I may need a new tranny. What the heck gives? when I floor it it doesn't shift at all. I don't let it rev much further than 6 grand. Help!

The TH-700R4 was desighned not to shift when the throttle is more than 2/3 of the way open. Try to let off just a little when you need it to shift. If this doesnt work your tranny's clutches may be worn away, so a new tranny (go with a TH-350)may be in your near future. I'm planning on getting a TH-350 for my ride as soon as the old 700R4 dies. I'm willing to give up the overdrive for reliability. The TH-350 is a much better tranny in my opinion.

Whadddaya mean not supposed to shift??? There's something wrong as any and all automatic transmissions built from the beginning of time are supposed to shift from 1st to 2nd at wot.

When the transmission shifts from 1st to second the band is applied, the intermediate clutch pack doesn't release (it was applied in 1st) and the intermediate sprag holds.

Since the intermediate clutches don't really take much abuse (I could still see the ink print on mine with 110,000 miles on it) I would suspect the band or some internal problem/internal leak.
