What do I need to do to get full usage of 3.73's?

What do I need to do to my setup to take full advantage of the 3.73s?

Will I notice difference dropping from 3.73's gears to 3.42's on my setup (below)?
The 3.73 seem to be to make the motor rev out of its power band, would the 3.42's make a difference or should I even go to 3.23s?.

What do I need to do to my setup to take full advantage of the 3.73s?

I have a 1988 L98, 3.73s, ported upper plenum, SLP headers, Flowmaster exhaust, free mods.

Shift gears before it revs out of the powerband.

This is one of the problems with the 700-r4's. A real steep 1st gear w/ a significant ratio decrease into 2nd (don't remember exact ratios off hand). So in 1st w/ the 3.73's it probably tachs up real quick but will help you stay w/ in the powerband when you shift into 2nd. The 3.42's won't tach up as quick in 1st but will make it feel sluggish into 2nd. Hot Rod mag did an article way back in the early 90's with a basically stock l98/700-r4 equiped GTA where they installed a bunch of different gear ratios and got the best results from the 3.73's. 4.10's gave 'em real inconsistent times b/c of excessive tire spin! The 3.42's decreased the times b/c the car would fall below it's power range when shifting from 1st to 2nd. You may want to consider a shift kit that would allow you to manually shift out of 1st quicker. Judging by the mods you have in relation to my friends 87 L98 Iroc, you should already be easily knocking on the 13-sec door! Hope this helps.
