Dana 44 Axle Shaft End Play - Can It Be Adjusted?

Hi, guys!

Need some help......

Is there a way to adjust axle shaft end play on a Dana 44 rear with C-clip axles? If so, what are acceptable end play tolerances? Optimum? Have no experience with this type rear end - this is my first Dana 44.

Purchased new Dana 44 4.09 ratio posi rear end assembly from SLP for son's 3rd gen. Camaro. Rec'd rear this afternoon. Axle ends look same as 10-bolt GM C-clip type. Axles appear to be Moser (marked "ME" and "2E4" on axle hubs). All looks well, EXCEPT for...... Excess axle shaft end play (0.062" on driver's side and 0.150" on passenger side).

Before I call SLP and Moser and speak with their tech people, I'd like to know - is there a way to adjust axle shaft end play on these type Dana 44 C-clip rears? Are C-clip Eliminator kits a possible fix if no provision for end play adjustment provided? Have heard C-clip Eliminators will leak if run on street - is that true?

Thanks in advance for your help, guys!

Best regards,

Harry

Are you sure it has C clips? I don't think the Dana 44 is supposed to have them.

Hi, Apeiron!

You are absolutely correct...... After posting this, I rec'd E-mail from Robert Moser. He says his company supplies axles to SLP and that this F-body Dana 44 is not a C-clip design, but uses pressed on bearings. He suspects wrong wheel bearings or faulty installation procedure by SLP.

Haven't been able to reach anyone at SLP that claims to know how to remedy end play problem as yet, but will keep trying. What puzzles me most is that the axle housing ends look the same as our 10-bolt with C-clip axles - nothing like older Chevys and Fords with axle bearing retainer plates I'm used to seeing.

Any Dana 44 experts out there that can tell me how to correct this problem? (Hate to pay shipping charge from Texas to New Jersey to return unit.)

Thanks again,

Harry
