Is my transmission supposed to do this?

Hi!

I have a question regarding the transmission on my 89 GTA.

The transmission is a 4 Speed Automatic.

Situation:
Whenever I'm driving in the city (Speed limits range from 20 to 50), and every time the car hits what I call the "threshold speed" (for lack of a better term, sorry!), and begins to shift into a higher gear, it tends to do a slight jerk forward while it's moving forward, as if it was trying to give me a case of phantom whiplash or something.

Are all third-gen automatic transmissions like this? Or is there something wrong?

*buys a voodoo doll of the )($##@$@ previous owner that treated this car so badly*

I appreciate all your guys' help! Thanks!

the car may have a shift kit, that would explain the firm upshifts. check the tranny fluid and maybe even change the fluid and filter. if the tranny does have a shift kit, it is supposed to shift late and firm.
