26 to 28 spline axle swap

I've been thinking about going for the OEM zexel torsen takeoff, but it won't work with my 26 spline axles. New axles cost too much for me at this point, so I'd like to check out some junkyards to find a set of 28 spline axleshafts. Is this a stupid idea? I don't know what kind of wear axleshafts get over time, or if there are any other things I should be concerned about. Basically wondering if I should go junkyarding or not take the chance.

You could probably get an entire used rear for less than one new 28 spline axle. You could have the Zexel put in it while you continue to drive your car (assuming you aren't set on using your current gear set).

The main problems I've heard of with axles is being bent by sliding sideways into curbs. Next after that is abuse from popping the clutch in manual cars - the axles typically snap, rather than being weakened and then breaking.

I called all the junk yards withing driving distance from me and nobody could come up with the 28 spline axles. I finally got a pair from Camaro Heaven (1-800-CAMARO1). He only had one for disk brakes, so I had to turn down the flange on the other one to fit.

The only cars that have the 28 spline axles that you can use are 90-92 models. 93 and up are 2 inches longer. Good luck finding 90-92 models in the junkyard and if you do they probably want too much for the axles anyway.

You can get 28 spline aftermarket axles from www.tomsdifferentials.com for $125 each. Part number is KAC7-A7. They're a direct fit in 82-92 f-bodys with a 28 spline carrier and drum or disk brakes.

I tried the link for the direct fit 28 spline axles and it did not work. Do you have another contact so I can get these axles? Seems that hardly no one wants to beef up a 7.5. I am thinking of 28 spline aftermarket axles, mini spool, and girdle/cover for my 7.5. I think this should hold for some good horsepower. The drop in 9-inch thing I think is a little pricey. What does anyone think?

Hi, Tadder!

Try http://www.tomsdifferentials.com/ for Tom's Differentials. Have you considered the Dana 44? SLP has a few left. They're pricey, but stout.

Happy Motoring,

Harry
