I just did a 305-350 engine swap. Also put in a rebuilt 700r4 and 2500 stall. I seated the stall, spun and seated a couple of times. When I spun it it sounded like gravel but spun freely, not sure if this was good. I put 1 quart of tranny fluid in converter and 4 in the tranny before putting in gear. Jacked rear end off ground and put in gear. Added 6 more quarts, (total of 11) to the tranny but the wheels never engaged in any gear. While car was in gear I disconnected the tranny lines at the radiator to make sure fluid was pumping and made a huge mess. Plenty of fluid shooting everwhere. I ran hose from the input/output to make sure there was no obstruction in the radiator/external cooler that was causing an issue. So that is where I am, fluid pumping fine but no gears work.

 

did you rebuild the transmission yourself
cause from my experiance the smallest thing in an auto can make a big difference. if you took it somewhere id take it back and have them take a look at it

 

I did not rebuild it myself, the guy I got if from had it done 2 or more years ago and it just sat. The pump seals and pan seals where new, but I know nothing about what was done inside other than shift kit.

 

Did you put the car on the ground and bring the rpm up?? Could just be the converter not engaging? Just a thought

 

I did not have it on the ground, just on stands. I did rev to around 3k just to make sure I was hitting the stall range. I have a sneaky feeling that the converter was a 30 spline instead of the 27 but I will have that verified tomorrow. I called Decco, the converter maker and thier tech told me that the 30 spline would go on a 27 spline shaft so I hope that it is that simple.

One thought, is it possible to mount a 30 spline converter on a 27 spline shaft? anyone have experience with this?

 

Case Solved!! It was in fact a 30 spline converter!!!!!!! Just need to make sure I did not grind the splines of the shaft, then I am good to go.

 

you could check in the pan and see if the trans has a thirty spline or 27.
look for a pipe going from the pump to a housing located behind the valve body called the forward accumulator. if it has the pipe the trans is probably a 30 spline and that is not your problem because it would ba a 86/half up core and uses a 30 spline. The builder might have forgot to hook up the manual valve inside the pan also-check your linkage internally(I've done this myself but won't admit to it-doh!)
