I have a 84 z-28. I would like to know if anybody could help me find out what axle ratio and what axle type I have. Here is the axle code that I find on the axle housing. 6hs c167 1.

1984 f-body axle code 6HS = 3.73 Locking
There is no 6H8 or 6H5

I don't know if the "locking" is a posi or a gov-lock.

C = Buffalo assembly plant
167 = day or year
1 = day shift

A gov-lock is normally an open diff but when one wheel starts to spin, the diff will lock up. When you see one you'll know what it is. It doesn't look like a posi with clutches or cones.

It will unlock again when the wheel speeds are different such as going around a corner. The locking mechanism isn't that strong for performance applications but it still works. My truck has one and I've never had any problems with it.

One easy way to find out your gear ratio, is to drive your car at 70MPH w/ your tranny in the 1:1 ratio (3rd for a 700, 4th for a T-5) and whatever your RPMs are, reflect your ratio. For example, my car w/ 3.73s cruise at 3700 RPMs, a 3.42 will be 3400, 3.08 will be 3000, etc.. I think you can make the connection.
