Removing axles and Tubes, ¿Como?

I recently aquired a dilpatidated 4th gen Rear, Sans Brakes.

Its 3.42 Stock ZT Posi, and I would like to rescue the center section For My Camaro. I have a 3.23 Open Rear from a 91 V6 Firebird ( read, 28 spline axles ) As well, And I would like to Combine the two.

So, With these two rears Sitting next to Each Other In the Garage, One would think it were a simple matter of Remvoing the axles's and Tubes From each center section, and Swapping back And Forth.

Am I right ?

If I am, How ? I havent gotten Dirty yet, But upon initial inspection, the method for removing the axle tubes Is Not obvious.

Thanks For your Help, 3.08 Unlimited Slip Did Not cut it with my Stock LG4, and its about 100x Worse Now.

i'm going on how i did it with a lot of other rear ends, never did a 3rd gen. a inch or so from where the tube goes into the center section should be a plug weld, most likely 2 on each tube. i always used an arc-air to scarf the weld out then use a die grinder to finsih it and clean up the area. a torch would work just as good, just be careful and use a die grinder and carbide bit to do the actuall seperation of the weld, the torch or arc-air for the rough work. after you have them out you can cut, move, or what ever you want.

So, could I just aug em out with a grinder then? I don't have access to a Torch or arc-air (hell, I barely know what tha is )

And once i get em apart, How Do I put it back togeter, Am I Gonna have to reweld it ?

well you could drill the plug welds and then use the die grinder to finish it. if it were me i'd build a jig around it to hold everything and then cut the tubes. when you put it back locate it off the jig. if that isn't possiable take a lot of measurements with a tape, angle finders, and square before you start cutting then locate everything the same as it was before you cut it.

I would take it to a shop to have the tubes installed on the other centersection. In order to make sure the tubes are straight they can install a steel rod through the bearing caps and measure between the o.d. of the rod and i.d. of the tubes to make sure the tubes are perfectly parallel to the axle centerline. This step is critical to make sure you have no problems with axle bearings and brake assemblies due to the tubes not being parallel to the axles.

Yeah, I guess I been Hanging out with Too Many Ford Guys...

I was trying to get away with Not having to Deal with bearings ect, But I think Ill just pull the carrier out, and Take it down to the Local gear guy, and have Him Put it In the other.

Thanks
