Clutch suddenly won't disengage!
Clutch suddenly won't disengage!
Not about a 3rd gen, but I figured I'd post here since it's easy to have your post buried over in the LT-1 section on camaroz28.com amongst 40 THOUSAND other posts! Any help would be much appreciated.
Without warning my 94 Formula left me stranded at a stoplight today. It wouldn't go into gear while the engine was running (any gear). Shut off the motor and you can select any gear you like, however. Obviously, the clutch is not disengaging for some reason. Never had a problem before and the tranny/clutch have not been messed with for almost 60K miles (car has 120 on it now).
Flash forward a few hours, car at the dealership. They call and say it's now shifting just fine and they didn't even touch anything yet! Problem mysteriously just went away.
I immediately suspected that the hydraulic clutch assy. went bad but they said the clutch pedal would get really soft if that was the problem. Mine didn't seem to exhibit that symptom, but I was stranded in the middle of a busy intersection at the time so I wasn't really paying much attention to the clutch pedal pressure.
Someone has been though this exact same situation, I'm sure. Clutches don't just stop working one minute and start working again the next. Help much appreciated.

Could the clutch fluid have boiled? That's all I can think of.
It wouldn't have to stay engaged completely to make it impossible to shift.
That's not a normal problem with the LT1/3rdgen external hydraulics, though.

that problem usually occurs when the clutch master or slave cylinder goes bad. Make sure fluid is full in the clutch master cylinder and try bleeding the line. Usually if its a throw out bearing you can't mash the pedal or the clutch won't engage.
OK, how about a seized pilot bearing? That's the culprit. When was the last time you heard of one of THOSE things go bad???
It was tight enough to keep the trans input shaft turning even when the clutch was disengaged! Let it cool off, it loosens up and everything works fine.
Likewise, the numbskull who installed my clutch (and this now-deceased pilot bearing)didn't bother with lubrication or I would have gotten many more miles from this clutch.
