So, it has 3:73 gears? Is there anything else special about it? 9-bolt? 10-bolt? Ring gear size? Limited slip? Any info about it would be appreciated...

It would be a 10 bolt, should be liited slip but you need to look for a tag on the cover or spin one side and see if the other side turns the same way. I doubt very seriously it is a 3:73. Only factory rears I know that came with 3:73's were 4 cyl 5 speed cars. Ring gear is 7 5/8 inch

If the rear is in an L69 car, it'll have a 10-bolt with 3.73's. The gear size is meaningless since the two(7.5+ and 7.6+) are virtually the same. Limited slip? Pull the cover and take a peak as there where many open diffs.

Most L69 5.0L HO cars got 3.73 gears but if it came out of an auto trans car it could have a 3.42. Its hit or miss on limited slip. It should have a metal tag on one of the differential cover bolts if its a posi. Many of the early cars got an open rear end.

Yeah, I was almost sure it had 3:73's, I just wanted to find out more about before I went to the JY to look at it, since it is sitting on the axle, in the mud. It's on the same car I mentioned in this thread: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/hist...ml#post4028582

I don't want anything with that small of a ring gear though, which I was pretty sure all third gens had.

Which was 84 only, IIRC.

Re: '84 Z28 H.O. rear end

The '84 will have the 7 1/2 inch rear end with 26 spline axles. The 7 5/8 wasn't until about '87. It might have the Governor Lock differential, which won't work like the other posi rear ends when you turn one tire. The other tire will not turn the same direction. The only way to be sure of what you have is to remove the cover and look at it. Anything else will just be a guess.
