Can an '85 700R4 be improved like '87-'93

I just found something out in the archives. I thought that I had the 27 spline converter, but I have the 30. I thought that that the 30 started in 87.

I think I've read that the reason the 87-93 are better is because the an auxilury valve body.

If I rebuild my '85 can I update it to the newer designs?

I was going to go with a stock rebuild, but if this one can be made stronger I want a performance rebuid. What performance mods do everybody suggest. I'm going to rebuild the 305 and performance mods on it will probably be cam, headers, ported heads. I want to bark in 2 or 3 gears now.

The 30 spline converter change was in late 84, I think...

Yes you can rebuild an 85 700R4 to 87+ specs. That should be done automatically by any competant trans rebuilder.

I thought that was completly impossible since the case, valvebody, and most of the hard parts are totally different....

When I get a hold of that ATSG book I'll go by it. It's supposed to have updates in the back for each model year.

Yes, you can update the 1985. The first thing is to install the Trans-Go Shift kit to correct the shift timing problems that were notorious in 1982-87 units. This kit can be modified too heavy duty specifications easily. Second, the late input & low/reverse sprag assemblies can be put in. Third, do all the updates that you would normally do when building this unit. The only thing that you will not be able to correct is the neutral to drive engagement, which is a little harsher on early units. (no forward accumulator, it acts as a cushion). If you have any questions please call me at 800 7763288 Mon-Sat 11-7 PST and I will do my best too help!!!

That's my main concern on the tranny, when I put it in drive it jerks really really bad. It also gets hot. I might just try to find a later model one.

How about the thick 3-4 clutch steels as in the newest 4L60-E's? Will they fit? I know there are many kits out there to put in more clutches, but from some of the stuff I've been hearing, the thicker steels are the way to go.
