Trasmission Shifted to Reverse at 15mph!!!!!!!

I didn't think this was possible. My son decided to shift my Automatic Transmission to reverse on my 84 Camaro coming to a light going about 15mph!!! Ouch!!!! Believe it or not it actually still shifts fine

But their is a constant LOUD clicking noise on first gear, stops on second gear and comes back at third. My reverse, OD, and neutral still work. My question is what can this be??? Also how long do I have before complete failure??

Hmm. I let my buddy drive my car and he decided he wanted to go throught the gears like I do and he pushed in the button and slammed it into reverse. The car instantly died and took like 15 minutes to start, but nothing went wrong.

I did that when I was 16 or 17 in my moms explorer. I was getting low on gas and decided to coast going down a hill. I accidentally put it up through neutral and into reverse. The tires chirped and I quickly pulled it back into neutral and never had any problems!

I did that to an Olds I had quite a bit. Never meant to. Raido shut off, always turned on when I started the car though. N shut the car off and restart it. Just slipped to R a few times to many. Never had a problem out of it though.

Re: Trasmission Shifted to Reverse at 15mph!!!!!!!

Since the noise occurs in first, third, and NOT reverse, it rules out the low-reverse roller clutch behind the planetary. Since it occurs in first and third, that would indicate the input shell and/or reaction sun shell. That assembly doesn't turn in 2nd and 4th (since the band is applied). I'd suspect you're going to find something wrong with the coupler fingers between them or that one or both ends of the shell is distorted and hitting the inside of the case as it rotates. It is most likely hitting on the drain opening at the lower right of the trans between the upper case and upper valve body half.

Also, there is a spring/clip in the rear of the trans which normally holds the reverse clutch stator in position and flexes slightly when the trans is driving in reverse. It might be crushed flat or snapped now.

Think of this as an opportunity. You get to build your transmission to be stronger and better, and you get to teach your son how to R&R a transmission, clean all those parts, and how to lift/hold heavy assemblies onto the workbench.

Re: Trasmission Shifted to Reverse at 15mph!!!!!!!

actually it'll be a planet. fix it now or major metal will circulate. it is the one in the back of the transmission so complete tear down will be necessary. You'll need a complete planet package for the l/r. it will include a reaction gear, reaction carrier, and internal reaction gear. Sorry for the bad news. diagnosed that one one time too many that's how I know.

Re: Trasmission Shifted to Reverse at 15mph!!!!!!!

But the rear plantary is straight through in 3rd range, and active in reverse. The sprag in the rear plantary is only active in 1st and R. The OP reported no noise in reverse but the same noise in 3rd as 1st. Are you thinking the pinions themselves are chewed on one side of the faces?

You've probably been through a lot more of these than I have, since I only build them as a hobby/casually. Educate me, please.

You're right in any event, the trans needs to come out to assess the carnage.

Re: Trasmission Shifted to Reverse at 15mph!!!!!!!

the planet noise changes-noise in first-no noise in second. I sometimes had to drive next to the building to hear them, but pulling the pan will suffice to diag the metal will be apparent-chunky.
the low roller clutch is on(so is the forward clutches and forward sprag) in first and when it shifts to second it is off and it connects to the low planet
