For those of you with a 5 speed trans and a Detroit Locker....

Just curious to see if your driveline is as noisy as mine is. When i start my car up and shift it into first gear it clunks. When i let off the gas to shift into second, it clunks, when it's put into 2nd and I let off the clutch, it clunks, lol. Making turns and going on and off the throttle makes it clunk like crazy. It feels like the whole car is going to fall apart. From everything that I have read though, it's normal. If its clunking then it's doing its job they all say! The biggest issue that I have with it is the fact that it puts such a different kind of load on the drivetrain, that shifting through gears is not a fluid motion anymore. Maybe I have to relearn how to synchronize the gas pedal with the shifts again, but every gear I try to go in the shifter seems to fight me. And it only started after I installed a Currie built 9 inch Ford with the Detroit Lockers 35 spline axles and 3.90 gears. Anyone else have something similar to this? Thanks for any replies.

its a locker, what did you expect? They are made for go fast, straight and thats it. Im using a tru-trac and its nice and smooth, quiet and works like a charm

Yea, mine does the same thing. I've learned to live with it. I've had to replace the rear u joint a few times because it hammers it pretty good. I've got about 100,000 miles on mine.

That's exactly what I read about and was told to expect. I am not complaining about it from a noise factor, but for the rough shifting issue. I was just worried that my trans is going to get messed up because the locker is making something bind up.

Big Gear Head- Is your car a stick as well? If it is, do you have a hard time getting the shifter into each gear like I do?

Mine is in my 4X4 S10 truck. It is a T-5. I don't have any problem shifting gears. It just kind of hammers the drive line when I let the clutch out. My '69 Camaro has a Muncie 4 speed and a Detroit Locker in it too. It's the same as my truck. I've learned to drive them a little different. I don't get supprised when it makes the loud pop when leaving a stop sign and I just smile at the people who tell me that I have a bad u joint.

Have you checked the clutch to see if it is disengaging completely?

Yes the clutch disengages properly. I had a factory 4th gen rear end in it before with an open diff and 3.42 gears. As soon as the 9 inch went n this shfiting noise occured.

I can't think of any reason why the Detroit Locker would cause the transmission to shift bad. Maybe the blocker rings went bad about the same time that you switched the rear end. Might be time to put in something stronger. You know that this one is going to break anyway.

Re: For those of you with a 5 speed trans and a Detroit Locker....

I had to replace my driveshaft seal a couple of days ago along with a new VSS and a 3 inch Denny's steel driveshaft. I put some new atf in there after the repairs and alot of the noise is gone. I still get the clunking from the locker which I understand is normal but now I feel something different. Whenever I go to shift in 2nd, let's say, when the shifter gets really close to engaging the gear, I can feel the gears inside the transmission not wanting to synchronize. The shifter kinda vibrates a little bit, then one of the gears slows down and it will go into gear. Weird, huh? I am afraid to shift it fast(I like to speed shift alot, but no powershifting!) for fear that the gears will grind. I'm not sure what to do about this. All of these things just started happening after this locker went in. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and get an automatic??

NO!!! Don't go to the slush box! You probably just need to replace the blocker rings in the transmission.
