Cable or Hydraulic clutch mechanisms.

Do some manuals use just a cable to engage/disengage and some use a master/slave setup? I was reading the tech article on doing the auto to manual swap and it just mentioned hooking up the cable. I think that tech article could/should be written better IMO. If there is 2 ways of doing this, which one is better? Thanks.

Engine: 350
Transmission: WCT5
3rd gens don't have cable actuated clutches. in '83 and '83 they had a mechanical pushrod actuator and then from '84 on they had a hydraulic actuator. I haven't read the article lately but figure the "cable" in question is probably the speedometer cable at the transmission.
