hey all im putting a new clutch into my 82 firebird and have some technical questions. it has the 2.8 v6 with the 4 speed manual. from what i have been told is that i need to drop the rear end, remove the coil springs, then remove the torque arm and continue on with replacing the clutch as normal. is it really necessary to remove the torque arm, and coil springs completely or can i just unbolt it from the trans, OR basically in a nutshell do i really have to do all the extra steps to do the clutch??? thanx in advance

dont know if the 6 is diff from the 8 cyl. setups but i just did a clutch in mine and all i did was disconnect the tork arm from the tranny and pull the drive shaft then just unbolt the rest and pull the tranny cant see why you would need to go through the rest?

thats the same plan i was thinking initially then i started reading my chiltons and haynes just to make sure there would be no speed bumps and thats about where my heart sank i just bought the car a week ago and haven't been able to drive it at all. im sick of my POS honda i want to be back in a REAL car with actual torque and horsepower, LOL

It's safer the Haynes/Chilton way but not necessary. Just disconnect the torque arm from the tranny but be aware that if the rear springs are still in they will force the arm upward in the tunnel, sometimes with a fair amount of force. Put a small piece of wood against the tunnel for the end of the arm to rest on. When you support the car make sure the jack stands are under the rear axle tubes.
