Need Help!! 700r

Hey guys,

I have a 84 camaro l69 with a 700r that is dead(shifted to reverse at 15mph). Just wondering will all 700r transmissions from camaro from 82-92 fit my 84?? I can get a transmission from my local junkyard for really cheap.. $1000 for a rebuild is not the kind of money I have right now and I really need my car.. was planning on doing this swap in my garage with my car on jackstands any advice?? I have all tools but never have taken out a 700r.. any tips and comments are GREATLY appreciated.. Thanks

Re: Need Help!! 700r

The l69 is a 305 v8 correct? All 700r4's would work but the wiring will be different, and different ones act different (different shift points etc.).
The wiring will be the biggest hurtle. You could try to switch your internal wiring to a different trans with success. Using your governor would also help in the shift points department. Just make sure the bellhousing is for a v8 as the 4/6cyls differ.
Also use your speedo parts, the one on the shaft also.
The torque converters differ, 27 v.s. 30 spline so watch out for that as they differ. and use the correct converter for the spline count of the input shaft.
retain your t.v. cable also as they are different lengths for other applications. Hope that helps...
during install the rookie mistake is not having the torque converter fully in the trans during install. make sure it is in the trans all the way before you install it to the engine, or poof. it is broke.

Re: Need Help!! 700r

you often can get a good used tranny at a junkyard,
i got one from an '85 caprice for $100 14 yrs ago
-still going strong-put in shift kit, servo upgrade,
mild aftermarket converter,TCI deep pan.used speedo
gears and tailshaft from a 3rd gen 700r4.
700r4 was upgraded in 1984 and again in 1987,so '87
up would be the best if you look for a used one.
When i swapped mine in, i bought a cheap taiwanese
trolley jack and modified that into a tranny jack.
To allow the engine to move more without damage,
i removed the distributor cap and fan from the
engine, loosened the exhaust.got the car well up in
the air on jackstands, rolled the tranny under the
tunnel, lowered car down about 8'',put 2 pieces of
threaded rod in bottom engine holes to guide tranny
into position, pushed forward onto engine(make sure
converter is fully seated as stated above) tightened
bellhousing bolts, raised back end up,bolted all back
together,put in fluid-test drove.

Re: Need Help!! 700r

nice. see, not all that difficult. Nice success story. I think more junk yard transmissions get a bad rap because simple things are overlooked by the purchaser (make model 2wd not a 4wd etc.). some common sense goes a long way. I worked in shops forever and still it seems all my own get installed on a late night on jackstands at home/some of the best memories though.
