I read an article about a guy who has that combo. It was in a book called Camaro Bolt-on Performance Guide. Where are you in Jacksonville? There's a store called Automotive Engineering that sells that book. About the emmissions, GM classifies the engine to be used in 1973 or newer cars or for any year offroad vehicle, but I'm sure you can get it to pass a sniffer test easily. My combo is similar, but I've got the 330hp vortec engine with a T56.
i'm actually in jacksonville nc. i thought i specified when i registered, but i guess i forgot to. anyways, everybody says that the t56 is a great swap, how painless is it really for the install. i know the entire clutch system has to be replaced. does the t56 have good gas mileage benifits with 6th gear? thanks man

The ZZ4 engine by itself as a carb'd config is only legal as part of a special kit for 82-87 LG4's and L69's with automatic transmissions. Its 50-state legal that way. For a TPI car, all you have to do is add the Corvette L98 EGR tube, and it'll pass smog easily. For a TBI, I have no idea. The heads do not have the EGR passages in them, which is the problem.
The T56 will bolt up to a ZZ4 engine with no problems.

The t-56 is real easy to install. Its an afternoon job if planned right. You need to change the slave cylinder over to a 4th gen one, which is real easy and you need to notch the floorpan about 2 inches at the rear of the shifter hole. I bought an aftermarket crossmember and the whole thing bolted right in. The stock driveshaft fit, but I did later switch to the 6 speed front yoke since it has a longer thread engagement.
