Getting new rear end, i'm clueless

Ok, I have a 1992 Camaro RS w/305 TBI(350 TBI soon. As far as I know, I have the 700r4 tranny with 2.73 rear end. I want to put 3.42's and a posi rear end on it.

What kind should I get?
What benefits would I get from it?
What problems would I run into?

Thanks all

Hi,
I have an 86 Z28 and just two weeks ago had the rearend ratio replaced. I went from a 2.73 to a 3.73 rearend ratio. I chose Richmond Gears. This will really liven your vehicle up... I dont know what all you've done to it, but I dont have anything mechanical that is original, and the 2.73 was just bogging down the whole vehicle.
You will notice great throttle response and acceleration off the line, and less top end speeds. As long as you have overdrive, gas will not be too bad... I haven't noticed too much a difference, at least on the street...
You will have to recalibrate your speedometer... I have yet to do this, but the parts are available.
I recommend using redline gear oil, at least thats what was recommended to me.
Best of luck, if you have any other questions, feel free to email me.
Tim

Great acceleration, are we talking seat of the pants difference? Also, did you get a posi rear end? What the hell is a posi rear end? I heard that helps too, and I'm going to get both.

Thanks man,
Dave

With a posi rear end both tires spin at the same time no matter which has greater weight on it, thus when you do a burn out instead of one black mark you will have to. A posi is good if you have a lot of power because it allows the power to be distributed to 2 wheels instead of all power to one wheel.

Oh, and I believe a posi will give you better handling especially going into turns.
