700R4 BANGING

I have the 700R4 in my car...

it was rebuilt by Aamco 10,000 miles ago and it has a shift kit in it from the previous time it was rebuilt. As long as I have owned the car (both before and after I had the tranny rebuilt) it bangs really hard when slowing down on the 2-1 downshift.... but only when the shifter is in 'D'. In 'OD' it downshifts smoothly while slowing down, but in 'D' it is a very hard bang.

Why does it do this? Is it bad to drive around in 'D' if it is doing that?

Alot of 700r4's do this. You could feel the 2-1 downshift while slowing down in 'D' but not in OD.

Both my cars are like that, except when I replaced one of mine with a TCI you could feel it 'click' into 1st gear in all gears, even OD

I doubt that you have a Shift Kit (that would have to be TransGo as they own the name). The Shift Kit addresses this problem (which you will find in all 700's). More likely you have something like a B&M SIK that agravated the problem.

Is it safe to drive around with it in 'D' if it is doing that?

Since you are not giving it any torque, it shouldn't matter. What it really points out to you though is the overlap on the 2-3/3-2 shifts. A lot of wear can take place during those shifts. Many times it is this sort of overlap that people confuse for a 'good' shift (when it occurs during an upshift).
