Need new rear! Which one do I get?

Here is the deal! I have a 91 Z28 with 3.42 gears. I put them in about 15,000KM ago and now they are starting to whine again. I talked to the shop that did it for me and they can't do much because I put used gears in. Very understandable! I was in school and cheap was the answer at the time. I am not sure if my car still has the original 28 spline axles so I am going to swap a whole new rear from the junkyard.

Question is I can get a rear from an 89 firebird, is it a 28 spline? And the second question is, is there any difference between a 2.8 rear and a V-8 rear?

I want a 28 spline axle because I want the Zexel torsen posi and a set of richmond gears. I am tired of breaking stuff with my gutless 305TPI. Thanks in advance.

89 is the bitch year. You never really know how many spline you have unless you pull an axle. Go with one between 90 and 92. The rear ends are the same no matter what engine it was behind. The posi units were mostly in the Z28s though. I have a 3.42 rear from an 85 car in my 87. Stay away from the 82-84 units. I think they have different brake line fittings.

Thanks for the info. I had heard about the 89 being a change over year. I was wondering if it made a difference between the firebird and the camaro. I thought maybe the camaro got a 28 spline more often than firebird or vice versa. Maybe the Z28's got the 28 spline more often or something. ANYWAY...I found andother place that has a couple rears and it is a u pick right at the moment. We only have little ******* junkyards full of tempo's and 6000's LMAO. I would love to get one with a posi but I have never seen a camaro or firebird with a factory posi where I live.
