Bent TAIL SHAFT how in the #@$@ did this happen????
Bent TAIL SHAFT how in the #@$@ did this happen????
I have a 89 formula with a 700r freshly built and I got this major viberation so I pull the drive line out and MY TAIL SHAFT IS BENT!!!!!!!! How can this happen???? Is it my fault or the builders fault???? Please help...
I don't smoke crack this ain't your daddy you're talking to here. send me a bent output shaft and I'll send you a good one plus $100 how's that sound? I'm trying to help you here, I have about 5 output shafts in my garage right now, you could put a 20' extension pipe on one of these and lift a car with it without it bending, it'd break first, maybe it's out of a wrecked core or something. I don't appreciate the comments but do me a favor, tell me how you know it's bent.
One other point of interest, it ate into the tailshaft housing? There's a bushing in there too did it eat through that too? And what about the driveshaft? It goes into the tailshaft too, is it bent? did the bushing come out of it? where did it eat through the housing?

Ok check this out, My car would move but it would go and stop like I was pushing on the brake stop and go stop and go.........but anyway yes it did eat through the bushing also but when I pulled I had to beat the driveshaft out with a hammer and in most trannys you can at least turn the shaft and in mine you can't and also when you start the car and let it spin on its own it DON't spin true.......its spinning in a OVAL. So now what ideas do you have...oh yeah sorry for having a attitude earlier......
I think the rebuilder is at fault (depending on how long ago it was done) because it sounds like the bushing wasn't installed in the housing right and the yolk or output shaft has rust or dirt on the splines and it got binded up.. Like I said before it wont spin true without the yolk in it because the yolk bushing provides support for the whole output shaft assembly, I asked that question to a few pro's after I rebuilt my 700 and they said it's perfectly normal for it to sit off center in the tailhousing hole.
You should remove the tail housing and be able to turn the output with channel locks or vise grips, in neutral, it will be hard to turn one way and easier the other.
You need to get a new tailhousing with a new bushing, clean the splines on both the shaft and yolk and be sure the yolk slides free in and out of the transmission, if not use a small wire brush to clean it's inside diameter and do the same on the shafts outside. You may need to file burrs off the splines, the rebuilder may have dropped it and figured it would smooth itself out who knows but thats all I can guess right now, let me know what you find.

Well I took it back to the builder and its apart........and he showed me the shaft and it is so BENT....and he has no idea how it was done.......so Jay do you still want me to send it to you????

Can you post pictures of this? It does seem to be a rare occurance to me too, but I'm not gonna make the same offer of cash and a new shaft! I'd just like to see to what extreme it's bent, and if there's any evidence of it being dropped, etc....
I have dropped those things before, and not had any troubles.
Interesting! Maybe some of the more experienced transmission professionals will chime in here? Pro-Built, Leo????.... (Keep in mind, I'm not saying that anyone else is not experienced, I just am pretty sure that those 2 are!)
