Axle Swap

How hard is it to do? How long will it take? I am putting my current 28 spline axles into a 26 spline rear end.

To change from 26 to 28 spline axles you need to replace the carrier for the ring gear. This means pulling the axles out, removing the carrier, changing the ring gear to a new carrier, probably having to get the ring and pinion setup again but not usually if all the spacers are put back where they came from.

The real difference between a 26 and 28 spline carrier is the side gears that the axles go into. You could pull the 26 spline side gears out and install some 28 spline ones. I tryed this on a 1986 26 spline carrier. My 28 spline aftermarket axles wouldn't go through the hole in the carrier. It needed to be drilled out to 1 1/16" for the axles to go through. I'm not sure how factory 28 spline axles would work but I'm guessing it would be the same.

If you don't already have a 28 spline carrier, you could buy the SLP takeoff or look for a 90 to present 10 bolt from an f-body or S-10/S-15 pickup. They will have 28 spline carriers and the 90-92 f-body will have the proper length axles.

Since you already have 28 spline axles, I assume you also have a 28 spline diff. Why not just swap the diffs?
