i'm doing the swap real soon and i need to know about the tranny

someone said i can definetly keep my 6 tranny as long as i get a v8 bellhousing and get a custom clutch made (kinda like half of a 6 clutch and half of an 8 clutch put together)

i dont care about the durability
i just need it as a cheap fix until i can upgrade to a T56 in a year or so

any opinions???

oh yeah, its a 5 speed

email jersrjr (jersrjr@msn.com) and ask him about this. He just did it with a 4 speed in his '82. I'm not sure what year you've got (whether it's a hydraulic or mechanical clutch) but you can make it work.

A v6 trans will not bolt up to a v8 and the bellhousing is integral with the case of the tranny.

I better correct myself and say any 60 degree v6 (2.8L, 3.1L, 3.4L) transmission won't bolt up to a v8. A 4.3L v6 trans will but these trans are weaker internally.

Joel, you do understand he's talking about a manual transmission, right?

The V6 T5 trans will bolt to the V8 bellhousing, but the input splines are less, you would need a different clutch.

Also, because of the numerically higher 3.95 first gear of the V6 T5, torque multiplication is much greater->significantly lowering the torque rating of the trans.

If you decide to install this trans, you will be pulling it out within a week because the internals would be mutilated.

DO NOT even consider using a V6 T5 trans.

I'm sorry, but I think it all depends on how you drive the vehicle. If you race, then he transmission will die quickly. But a good driver who is careful can make it live long enough to swap the t56 when money allows.

if and when i do a camaro (parents won't let me now) i'll probably do the v6-v8 swap, and run a t56 with 4.10 gears. But don't let the naysayers about the t-5 hold you back. it can be made to work, although you do have to run the stock v6 clutch as it has less splines on the input shaft compared to a v8 t-5. my neighbor is running a v6 t-5 in his 84 camaro and he is using the 9 5/8" clutch behind his 350. he said that it was the biggest he could run. I'm guessing this is because he still has to use a v6 clutch disc.

it's called learning. build something, blow it up, fix it, you learn. how do you learn if you don't do?
