No way could you use the 400 flywheel. Matter of fact, I'm not sure there ever WAS a 400 flywheel, I thought all 400 SBC's came with automatics behind them.

Anyway, even if there was a 400 flywheel, the LT1 push style clutch won't mate to anything except a flywheel for an LT1. And an LT1 flywheel will not bolt up to the 400's 2 piece RMS crank.

All is not lost however, a few companies (including I think, Mcleod and Centerforce) make a T56 flywheel that fits a 2 piece RMS crank. They're pricey, but the only way I know of to make a 400/T56 combo work.

You can still use the stock LT1 pressure plate and clutch disc, or aftermarket.

I have a T-56 bolted to my 400. I changed the clutch set up to a Bob wier hydrolic throw out bearing and bellhousing.that aloud me too use any clutch set up I wanted and get rid of that slopy clutch that came with the t-56.I am pushing 500 HP and no clutch chatter and no slipping. The only problem that I ran into is that if you go with the 153 tooth you would have too drill and tap a hole for the starter.I don't know but I don't think you can put a 168 tooth flywheel with the stock t-56 bellhousing.Check with someone els on that.Check out my web site below.

That's partially true and partially not. There was a 400 pontiac motor, true. There was ALSO a 400 small block (please don't try telling me they don't exist, I have two in my garage that are torn apart and I have measured the 4.125" bore). Matter of fact there was even a 400 BBC (well, technically it was a 402, but GM badged them as 400s).

That is correct. 168 tooth flywheel will not fit.

if the 168 tooth flywheel doesn't fit, then what is the biggest clutch that can be run with a t-56?
