700R4 FOR A V-6 VERSES 700R4 FOR A V-8

 I OWN A 1984 CAMARO Z28 WITH A 305/V-8 IN IT,I ALSO OWN A 1986 FIREBIRD WITH A V-6 IN IT,BOTH ARE AUTOMATICS.THE TRANSMISSION IN THE CAMARO IS FRIED. SOMEONE TOLD ME THE TRANSMISSION IN THE FIREBIRD WOULD WORK IN IT BEING THEY ARE BOTH 700R4'S BUT I WOULD HAVE TO DO SOME CONVERTING BEING IT IS COMING OUT OF A V-6 AND GOING INTO A V-8 (305). IF THIS CAN BE DONE CAN SOMEONE TELL ME PLEASE WHAT I WILL HAVE TO CONVERT TO MAKE THIS WORK? THANK-YOU-I MISS MY CAR!!!

They are two different trannies. For the work involved in pulling and trying to swap parts, etc. It would be easier (and beter) to get an '88 or later unit to start with.

It can work, I've done it before but in your situation it would not be cost effective.
The reasons are the differences, the transmission cases are different and the input drum too. Not a big deal just use your V-8 700R4 case and input but..the v-6 700R4 has less clutches in it meaning you would need to add the required amout for it to be able to handle the 305. Sure you could swap everything into the case as is and have a weaker trans but you would at least need a gasket and seal kit and both would need total disassembly, you might as well just get the bad one rebuilt, it will save you money in the end. A gasket and seal kit from TCI is $70, a cheap rebuild kit with clutches and all is $150, then figure the cost of labor. You're better off rebuilding the one.

Not just the bell housing but the input shaft and converter too.

I like to refer to the bellhousing as a removable part, if it can't be removed I say case because you obviously have to change out the whole case if the bellhousing is not removable. If you go and tell the person the bellhousing needs to be changed it sounds simple until they go to change it. There would be a considerably different labor cost between changing a bellhousing( like on a ford c-4) and an entire case change out.
