T5 internal speedo gear
T5 internal speedo gear
I think the driven gear inside my T5 is broken.
Can it be replaced by just removing the tailshaft or does the whole damn thing need to come out?
The speedo cable let go and was replaced. The speedometer has checked out good but the drive gear that goes into the trans from the outside (mates with the speedo cable) teeth are kind of bent or sightly deformed. They dont look bad enough to cause speedo malfunction but I have a new one ordered. In the mean time Car is out and I am trying to plan my next move if new gear does not work.
Thanks guys.

well lets get this strait the drive gear in the one in the trans mounted to the out put shaft. and the driven gear is the one that mounts to your cable or sensor. now yes you could just pull off the rear of the trans but, you would have to take every thing off the trans including the shifter. and getting it back on would be very hard. I always stand mine up on end and lower the tail on. so basically if it comes down to replacing you drive gear I would pull the trans.
O.K. so I will need to pull the trans if in fact it is the drive gear inside that is bad.
Is it possible or should I ask, a common problem to break the internal gear when the cable fails?
