TCI Pro super Kit?
TCI Pro super Kit?
Ok heres the deal. I've got an 89 L98 camaro, with the 700r4. The tranny needs a rebuild, I don't know the entire extent of the damage but I'm pretty sure it's bad. My car has some work done to it and is probably in the 300HP range, I'd like the tranny to be able to handle approx 400HP. I've got a 3.42 gear in the back, and I'll probably put in about a 2400 stall.
Ok I've phoned around locally, (Northern Canada) and got some prices on rebuilds, for about $2200 Canadian (US $1400). That seems high to me. My local mechanic has done lots of 700's and he'll do the work if I supply the parts, so what parts should I get? I've seen the TCI kit #TCI-378900 for about US$200 and it says that it includes Gaskets, seal kit, pan gasket, new friction clutches, steel clutches, bands, adjustable modulator, high volume filter, drain plug kit, and it also contains a TCI Transcat Super II package to change valve body to manual. Thats the generic description for all the kits in the catalogue but it's probably similar. What else would I need? Is TCI anygood? Will it stand up to 400 horse? Any past excperiences with TCI?
Now I saw the rebuild kit at the pro-built website. Are these kits similar in in makeup? I'm sure the Pro-built is better but does it include additional parts that the TCI doesn't have? or is it just twice the price based on the quality?
I'm by no means attached to TCI. I just saw there kit first and it looked pretty complete, any recomendations would be greatly appreciated, never done a transmision before.
Thanks
Brian

You could get all the stuff you need cheaper from http:www.hptransparts.com
Just remember these arn't 'complete' kits. The frictions come together but the band is seperate as is the rubber kits, washer kits, sprags... pump kits...
Basically the tci kit is a friction kit with a band and a rubber kit... That's about it. Plus hptrans uses alto red eagle frictions with kolene steels and a wider red eagle band which i'm sure is better than tci's stuff (well i'm sure tci doesn't make it, they just jack the price up and stick their name on it)
Borg-warner hi-energy frictions are also top of the line...
You should also rebuild your pump.
Also since the band is wider and your original band prolly dug into the drum, http:www.gmpartsdirect.com hooked me up with a fresh drum for $45.
